Prostate Cancer Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy may be used as the sole form of treatment for early stages of prostate cancer or for those patients who are not candidates for surgery. Radiation therapy may also be used in addition to surgery in more advanced stages.
Radiation therapy is the use of ionizing radiation to treat cancer as well as some benign diseases. Ionizing radiation therapy injures or destroys cells in the areas being treated.
Types of therapy include external-beam radiation and interstitial implantation of radioisotopes. Forms of therapy are dependent upon the stage of the cancer and the intended purpose of treatment.
