Nursing Careers: Clinical Practice

Nursing Careers

Clinical Practice Areas

What kind of nurse do you want to be? Medical-surgical, trauma or intensive care? Rehabilitation, pediatrics or long-term acute care? These and many exciting practice areas are available at Memorial Hermann, where you can find virtually all clinical specialties.

One of those careers is in forensic nursing, where specially trained forensic nurse examiners (FNE) gather evidence from and provide care to patients who may have been involved in violence. Memorial Hermann has just introduced the nation’s first mobile forensic nursing unit to facilitate rapid response to crime scenes and to better protect DNA evidence, while getting care to the patient more quickly.

An FNE is a registered nurse (RN) with specialized training who:

  • Provides comprehensive care to patients with interpersonal violence issues (sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child sexual and/or physical abuse, and random violence)
  • Demonstrates competency in conducting a medical/ forensic exam
  • Has the ability to testify as an expert witness in a court of law
