Nurse Refresher Course

A New Beginning - A New You!
Been out of nursing for a while? Re-entering the nursing profession doesn't have to be frightening! Memorial Hermann is committed to helping RNs and LVNs transition back into their profession in a supportive environment. Find out how quickly you can return to the art of healing.

About Our Program
This unique program combines both self-directed computerized learning and a precepted clinical experience to allow the participant to move through the program at their own pace. This refresher program is for both RNs and LVNs that have been out of practice for an extended period of time and are required to complete a refresher program by the Board of Nurse Examiners before practicing again. This program is approved by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.

Computerized Learning
The software used in this program is called Performance Development Software. It is used in nursing schools across the nation to prepare nurses to practice. This software provides a total system assessment review. These modules cover all the body systems and allow the participant to review basic to advanced concepts using critical thinking problem solving in a risk-free environment.

Clinical Experience
Upon successful completion of the computerized learning, the participant will be eligible to apply for their permit to practice nursing from the Board of Nursing Examiners. They will then receive their clinical schedule and will be precepted by a Registered Nurse in the hospital setting. This experience will enable the nurse to put into practice the knowledge they gained from the self-directed learning. The RN will supervise the participant, teaching skills and facilitating the transition back into nursing practice.

  • Knowledge 100 hours (minimal)
  • Pre-Clinical 40 hours (Will attend day 2 of Nursing Orientation/Classroom)
  • Clinical 80 hours

Requirements for the Refresher Program

The participant must have a current license/permit to practice nursing in the state of Texas (if you will be utilizing a temporary permit, do not send for it until you have been accepted in a program).

The participant must submit to a TB screen by Memorial Hermann, and meet our requirements.

The participant must be interviewed minimally by a representative from the Organizational Development Department, and show the ability to meet the behavior expectations of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System.
