The sports physical therapy residency program is designed to graduate innovators and leaders in advanced clinical practice in sports medicine. Residents are prepared throughout the program to sit and successfully complete the Sports Credentialed Specialist exam upon graduation. The 13-month program is focused on advanced clinical practice, teaching and mentoring, clinical research, and leadership and is structured in accordance to the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education requirements.
Residents train one on one with board certified and fellowship trained physical therapists, physicians, and surgeons. Our facilities, our alignment with the UT Health Houston Medical School, and our integration with the IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute provides and unparalleled teaching and learning environment and unprecedented access to leaders in sports medicine.
Additionally, residents collaborate with athletic trainers at the University of Houston Sports Medicine department to experience comprehensive immersion into a NCAA Division 1 athletic program and the complexities of healthcare for the student-athlete. Residents gain additional experience in sports at the high school level through our affiliation with various public and private high schools. The Athletic Training Outreach team provides additional learning opportunities such as IRONMAN event coverage, ImPACT™ Testing, sports physicals at local high schools, and weekend injury clinics.

Additional highlights of the resident experience include collaboration with the IRONMAN Sports Medicine Human Performance team, weekly physician conferences, clinical instruction of a physical therapy student, mentoring of incoming residents, healthcare administration, and venue coverage.
