A Letter from our President & CEO Regarding Cigna Insurance

To our patients and families,

We appreciate you choosing Memorial Hermann as your healthcare provider. Serving this community for more than 110 years is our greatest pride, and remains our greatest focus.

Memorial Hermann and Cigna continue to have productive discussions and are making substantial progress toward reaching a new, multi-year agreement.

Given the extraordinary public health crisis affecting Greater Houston, Cigna and Memorial Hermann issued a joint statement on March 24:

“Our focus is on the health of Houston and doing all we can to contain the spread of COVID-19. We recognize that these are unsettling times for our community, and we want to reassure Memorial Hermann patients and families, as well as Cigna customers, that there will be no disruption in their access to care during this time. We remain committed to bringing our negotiations to a successful conclusion and reaching a new agreement that provides our patients and customers access to safe, high-quality care at an affordable cost.”

On May 27, Cigna and Memorial Hermann issued the following statement to announce a contract extension that would allow for both organizations to continue negotiations:

“Cigna and Memorial Hermann are extending their existing contract an additional month, through July 31, 2020. The two organizations continue to have productive discussions and are making substantial progress toward reaching a new, multi-year agreement.

If Cigna and Memorial Hermann are unable to reach an agreement by July 31, Memorial Hermann would be out-of-network for Cigna's commercial customers starting August 1.

Cigna's Medicare Advantage plan customers are not affected by this negotiation.”

In the meantime, I know you may have questions regarding this possible change, and we promise to keep you apprised of any significant updates, which will be made available here on our website.

FAQ

Q: I have Cigna insurance. How does this impact me as a patient of Memorial Hermann?

A: At this time, there is no change for our patients who carry Cigna. Memorial Hermann remains open to working with Cigna to avoid disruption in care for our patients and families, and hopeful that we can continue to partner with Cigna in making Houston a healthier place today, and far into the future. However, if a new agreement is not reached, Memorial Hermann facilities and our affiliated physicians will be out-of-network beginning August 1, 2020.

Q: Can I still see my doctor?

A: Yes. At this time, there is no change for our patients who carry Cigna. However, if a new agreement is not reached, Memorial Hermann facilities and our affiliated physicians will be out-of-network beginning August 1, 2020.

Q: I thought the agreement with Cigna ended March 16, 2020?

A: On May 27, Cigna and Memorial Hermann issued the following statement to announce a contract extension that would allow for both organizations to continue negotiations:

“Cigna and Memorial Hermann are extending their existing contract an additional month, through July 31, 2020. The two organizations continue to have productive discussions and are making substantial progress toward reaching a new, multi-year agreement."

Q: What can I do?

A: We greatly value you as a patient and encourage you to contact Cigna directly to tell them you want to keep Memorial Hermann Health System and our affiliated physicians in your network. You may reach Cigna Corp. President and CEO David Cordani at david.cordani@cigna.com.

Q: Can I switch my insurance to keep in-network access to Memorial Hermann?

A: At this time, there is no change to your plan. However, for questions, we encourage our patients to contact their employer's Human Resources department about insurance plan options.
