Dr. Mehmet Akay earned his medical degree at Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine in Turkey and completed his general surgery residency at Michael E. DeBakey, Department of Surgery. This was followed by his Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at Texas Heart Institute and Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
Board certified in surgery as well as thoracic and cardiac surgery, Dr. Akay has practiced medicine since 1992. His clinical interests are advanced heart failure, adult cardiac surgery, cardiopulmonary transplantation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and vascular surgery.
Dr. Akay sees adult patients with advanced heart failure within the U.S. and internationally. His focus is on providing personalized care and treating each patient with respect. His patients are his highest priority and he always puts them first.
He is an Associate Professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston and affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Texas Medical Center. Dr. Akay is an active member of professional organizations, including the American Board of Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Turkish Cardiovascular Society. A published author in professional medical journals, Dr. Akay has received much recognition throughout his career.
When not caring for his patients, Dr. Akay enjoys watching soccer and visiting Turkey with his wife, two daughters and son.
