Dr. Murtaza Shakir received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the Aga Khan University in Karachi Medical Colleges, Pakistan. He completed general surgery residencies at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, and at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He finished his surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Hillman Cancer Center. He subsequently practiced in Louisiana, where he worked for three years as a general surgeon and a surgical oncologist. He moved to Houston to be closer to family and friends.
Board certified in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology, Dr. Shakir specializes in treating cancers of the hepatobiliary tract and pancreas, as well as malignancies of the breast, colon, parathyroid, stomach, thyroid, melanomas and soft tissue sarcomas. He also performs laparoscopic and robotic surgery for a variety of general surgical problems, including gallbladder and hernias.
Dr. Shakir is a member of the American Board of Surgeons (ABS), the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) and the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO).
In his free time, Dr. Shakir enjoys traveling and playing squash and cricket. Dr. Shakir and his wife have two children.
