What Do Immunologists Do?
Immunologists are physicians specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage allergies as well as many different types of immunological disorders. Immunologists treat allergic disorders which are common or rare across age groups. They also treat a variety of immunological disorders which can be of the autoimmune category such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s disease, Addison's disease, alopecia areata, scleroderma, and Sjogren's syndrome; or the immunodeficiency category such as HIV, DiGeorge syndrome, and Hypogammaglobulinemia. Immunologists play a vital role in avoiding rejection of transplant organs owing to their special training in immunity. They also help generations of patients’ by producing new vaccines to fight diseases.
