Dr. Robert Amato earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Christian University and his medical degree at the University of North Texas, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth. He completed his residency at Fort Worth Osteopathic Medical Center and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Dr. Amato has been in practice since 1983. His clinical interests include urologic oncology, tumor immunology, molecular targeted agents and personalized therapy.
One of the world’s leading experts in the treatment of genitourinary cancer, Dr. Amato is a full professor and Director of the Division of Oncology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School and the Chief of the Division of Oncology at the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center at the Texas Medical Center. He was named Houston Doctor of the Year in 2014.
Author of an extensive list of publications and presentations, Dr. Amato has served as principal or co-principal investigator for more than 45 clinical trials. He has also served on editorial boards and as a reviewer for numerous professional publications throughout the world.
Dr. Amato sees cancer treatment evolving into a new era during which more treatment options exist than ever before. He uses every bit of his professional knowledge and experience to ensure that his patients can take advantage of advances in science and technology during their treatment. His practice philosophy centers on finding the most appropriate treatment for each individual, keeping up with developments and performing research to continually improve cancer care. He focuses on every individual patient, providing personalized treatment for each, rather than depending on only a handful of standard treatments.

As a result of his research relationship with the University of Texas and his years of experience with clinical trials, Dr. Amato is able to make new therapy combinations and new types of treatment available to even the sickest patients.
