Dr. Allen Deutsch received a Bachelor of Arts from City University of New York in Brooklyn, N.Y., and received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y. Dr. Deutsch completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland and his fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Deutsch specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery. He has more than 17 years of clinical experience in the Greater Houston region treating all shoulder and elbow conditions, including rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, shoulder instability, the overhead athlete, shoulder fractures and frozen shoulder syndrome. Dr. Deutsch has a particular interest in the diagnosis, rehabilitation and surgical management of the rotator cuff. He has performed more than 3,500 minimally invasive, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgeries. Dr. Deutsch personally performs in-office ultrasound of the shoulder to diagnose rotator cuff tears, performs therapeutic injections and monitors rotator cuff healing following surgery.
Active in clinical and basic science research, he has authored multiple publications and presentations related to the rotator cuff, postoperative rehabilitation, the use of ultrasound, allografts, shoulder replacement and shoulder instability. He has extensive clinical experience with surgical and non-surgical management of all shoulder conditions related to sports, overuse, impingement syndrome, work injuries, arthritis and trauma in high school and college-level overhead athletes, middle-aged weekend warriors and older patients who want to return to their active lifestyle.
Dr. Deutsch is a member of several professional organizations including the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Texas Orthopaedic Association and Houston Shoulder Society. In addition, he is a consultant reviewer for both the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. Deutsch currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Prior to joining the UTHealth faculty, he was a clinical assistant professor with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas.
