Dr. Akemi Kawaguchi earned her medical degree at the University of California-Los Angeles School of Medicine. She completed a residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.

Board certified in surgery and pediatric surgery, Dr. Kawaguchi’s clinical interests center on general pediatric surgery, including neonatal diseases, oncology, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic and abdominal surgery. Her clinical research interests include neutropenic enterocolitis, epidemiology and outcomes for neonatal diseases. She serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School.

Dr. Kawaguchi has been in practice since 2008, first in California and moving to Houston in 2014. Her patients range in age from premature infants to teenagers. She believes in treating children like they are her own – combining excellent surgical skills with good communication and a caring bedside manner. She loves children and making them better, focusing on treatment delivered with a kind, fun-loving attitude.

A Houston resident, Dr. Kawaguchi is married and the mother of two boys. Outside of her practice, she enjoys figure skating, art and baking.
