What Do Transplant Surgeons Do?
A transplant surgeon is a surgeon who has expertise in organ transplants. They perform a multidisciplinary evaluation on both the organ donor as well as the recipient, and provide post-operative care to the organ transplant patient. In addition, they follow the patient throughout their recovery and rehabilitation, and prescribe all medicines needed for immunosuppression to prevent transplant rejection. Organs which can be transplanted are liver, heart, kidney, intestine, lung, and pancreas. Some body tissues such as corneas, bones and tendons, heart valves, veins and arteries and skin can also be transplanted. All transplant surgeons on our directory are board-eligible or board-certified in transplant surgery and have completed a special transplant surgery fellowship as well as general surgery residency following medical school.
