In June 2009, Staman Ogilvie sustained a severe spinal cord injury while riding his bicycle. Staman has decided to use this experience for the good of those who currently suffer from a spinal injury or will suffer from one in the future.
Under the direction of medical experts at The Mischer Neuroscience Institute (MNI) at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, The Staman Ogilvie Fund for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Rehabilitation and Research was created to assist individuals who have been afflicted by spinal cord injury, brain injury or neurological disorders that traumatically disrupt their lives. The Ogilvie Fund supports innovative research to restore function for spinal cord injury through adult stem cell therapy. To complement this research, we have developed new TIRR Memorial Hermann equipment to increase movement for those with spinal cord injuries.
Through the support of Staman and his friends, family and colleagues from across the country and around the world, more than $10 million has been raised. Our objectives are to discover practical solutions and to provide hope for people with physical disabilities. Researchers have already made an extraordinary discovery focused on the regeneration of insulating fat for spinal nerves not significantly damaged during the injury.
The MNI and TIRR Memorial Hermann are uniquely prepared to care for victims of spinal cord injury. Patients with spinal cord injury face weeks, months or years of rehabilitation after suffering a serious injury or disease. Memorial Hermann is the only institution in the greater Houston area to provide a full continuum of care from its Level I trauma center through rehabilitation. TIRR Memorial Hermann is one of seven designated centers in the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network and has been ranked one of America’s Best Rehabilitation Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report since 1990.
