Cancer Treatment in Your Community

There’s something of a revolution going on in the way we combat cancer at Memorial Hermann – we’re taking treatments to the patients.

Traditionally, the most experienced physicians and sophisticated technologies were only available in centralized, urban facilities, such as the Texas Medical Center. Memorial Hermann offers state-of-the art cancer treatment in your community.

For example, the most advanced form of radiation therapy available today – an image-guided, intensity-modulated linear accelerator – is now available at Memorial Hermann Cancer Centers throughout the area. Not that long ago, there were only a handful of these devices around the world, and they were in the major medical centers.

Neelofur Ahmad, M.D., radiation oncologist on staff at Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Northeast in Kingwood, utilizes an accelerator in his practice. It’s a good example of bringing advanced treatment options to the communities.

“Probably 95 percent of cancer that’s diagnosed in the community can be treated in the community,” said Dr. Ahmad, “especially treatments like radiation therapy, which usually requires daily treatments – every day, Monday through Friday for several weeks. It’s a lot easier to do that closer to home than to drive 20 or 30 miles every day.”

Dr. Ahmad believes getting treatment close to home gives patients the advantage of both high tech and high touch.

“Patients in treatment are at a very difficult time, and they need a place where they feel emotionally supported, where they feel personally recognized – like a person, not a number. And we can offer them exactly that.”

By standardizing care, Memorial Hermann is working to insure that the same level of quality care is available to everyone in the community.
