Memorial Hermann|TIRR Challenge Program, 2455 S. Braeswood in Houston, provides specialized services that focus on the community re-entry skills that are critical for the transition to independent living, school or work following brain injury. This outpatient day treatment approach addresses the physical abilities, memory strategies, interpersonal communication and problem solving skills needed for long-term success.
Learning to live with a brain injury, whether the result of trauma, stroke or neurological condition, requires newly honed skills. The Challenge Program provides a comprehensive range of services to assist the brain injury survivor in maximizing potential. Special programs have been designed for clients with multiple sclerosis and individuals who have some combination of cognitive and physical difficulties due to mild or moderate dementia.
The purpose of rehabilitation is to build strength, new skills and confidence to continue daily activities despite the effects of the brain injury. Client services at the Challenge Program are focused in three distinct areas:
- Independence services focus on safety and productivity at home and in the community, communication skills, mobility, family education and adjustment.
- Employment services teach compensatory strategies and provide support to facilitate the return to work. Services include pre-employment job trials, job-seeking assistance, job coaching and consultation with employers.
- Educational services prepare high school and post-secondary school students to succeed in an educational environment. Therapy staff consults with school personnel about appropriate accommodations in the academic setting.
The Challenge Program has a track record of amazing success after more than 20 years of treating brain injury survivors. Our studies on outcomes show that, on average, 91 percent of those completing the treatment program decrease their need for supervision and 79 percent show an increase in their level of productivity.
Requirements for acceptance into TIRR’s community re-entry program include medical stability, basic self-care skills and an ability to benefit from the program. In addition, the individual must have a friend or relative committed to serving as a partner in the rehabilitation process.
