Model Spinal Cord Injury System Program
Memorial Hermann|TIRR has been designated as a Model Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) System Center since 1972. Funded by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) at the U.S. Department of Education, our Texas Model SCI System has received funding continuously every five-year renewal period for 30 years.
Currently funded through 2010, Memorial Hermann|TIRR collaborates with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine faculty.
This multi-center national study is done in collaboration with 14 other Model SCI System centers. This longitudinal study encompasses the natural history of spinal cord injury for patients who have received state-of-the-art rehabilitation following their injury.
All centers contribute medical, psychosocial and functional outcome data to the national database center. Memorial Hermann|TIRR's Model SCI System Center has a specific project on the development of a model for measuring a myriad of outcome factors in a holistic framework.
