Seven beds are dedicated to pediatrics, and the Center has separate pediatric waiting and triage areas. Beautifully decorated to match the child-friendly motif throughout the hospital, the Emergency Center at Children's Memorial Hermann features whimsical nature characters that help make children feel at ease.

Services

Children's Transport Team

For patients needing critical care, increasing the chance for survival and recovery means getting the best care as quickly as possible. The Children's Transport Team at Children's Memorial Hermann provides specialized emergency pediatric and neonatal transport services for patients from infants to 16 years of age around the clock, 365 days a year.

Modes of Transportation

Our transport capabilities ensure that children whose parents take them to local, regional, national and international hospitals can be quickly transferred to a hospital within the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. Depending on the location and severity of the child's medical condition, the transport team will use:

  • A ground ambulance service for cases up to 300 miles away
  • Memorial Hermann Life Flight® air ambulance for cases up to 150 miles away
  • Fixed-wing air transport worldwide

Important Facts

The Children's Transport Team is led by pediatric and neonatal intensive care physicians.

The team routinely transports some of the most critically ill infants and premature babies including those born as early as 23 weeks' gestation and weighing as little as one pound.

More than 40 percent of Children's Transport Team patients in 2006 were transported by Memorial Hermann Life Flight air ambulance service. Life Flight allows us to quickly get patients the resources they need - at a time when minutes can be precious.

Forensic Nursing Services

Our Pediatric Emergency Center offers a special program for children called Forensic Nursing Services. Through the program, registered nurses provide comprehensive care 24 hours a day to patients with interpersonal violence issues.

The Forensic Nursing Services team travels to six other hospitals in the Memorial Hermann system in a mobile unit. This unique service began in 1992 as an adult sexual assault nurse examiner program. It was revitalized in 2001 to provide nurses who respond to all victims of crime, including physically and sexually abused children.

The Pediatric Emergency Center houses a room containing specialized equipment for use in assessments. Information gained from evaluations is passed on to law enforcement agencies.

Forensic Nursing Services works as a multidisciplinary team to bridge the gap between healthcare and law enforcement.
