Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital
Because Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital is committed to caring for the whole person, chaplains are available to children and families 24 hours a day. They are professionally trained and credentialed members of the health care team who give primary attention to emotional and spiritual needs.
Fear, sadness, anger, loneliness and confusion are some of the more common feelings children and their families experience during a hospital stay. Chaplains are available to help children and families work through these emotions.
Illness and injury remind us that life is fragile. Awareness of mortality creates in many people a desire to connect with divine resources. Although chaplains are clergy rooted in a particular faith tradition, they are trained to assist people of a variety of faith traditions. They are available to pray, provide other rituals of faith and visit with children and families about the spiritual aspects of their experience.
Families sometimes face very difficult decisions about the appropriate course of treatment for their child. In addition to the resources of the medical staff and Institutional Ethics Committee, many want to consider the ethical teachings of their faith in making decisions. Chaplains are available to help facilitate this.
Although prayer is not limited to a specific area of the hospital, we have set aside several rooms particularly for the purpose of prayer:
- The Sterling Prayer and Meditation Room , located on the first floor of the Robertson Pavilion across the hall from Café Hermann
- The Muslim Prayer Room , located on the sixth floor of Cullen Pavilion in Cullen 623
- The Mirtha G. Dunn Interfaith Chapel , located on the ground floor of the atrium and available whenever services are not scheduled
Regular worship services are held according to the following schedule:
- Wednesday – Interdenominational Christian worship at noon
- Sunday – Catholic Mass at 9:30 a.m. and Interdenominational Christian Worship at 11 a.m.
All services are held in the Mirtha G. Dunn Interfaith Chapel
