Stroke is the nation's fourth-leading cause of death and is the primary cause of adult disability. When a stroke occurs, getting expert treatment quickly is critical, as the prognosis for the patient is highly dependent on that variable.
Acute Stroke Care
Our skilled stroke teams are comprised of affiliated neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, emergency medicine physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, speech and language pathologists and social workers. The hospitals offer state-of-the-art treatment for any type of ischemic stroke (occurring as a result of an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain) or hemorrhagic stroke (occurring when a weakened blood vessel ruptures). Intravenous tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) therapy, a clot-dissolving medication that greatly improves outcomes and long-term recovery, is used for ischemic stroke patients who qualify.
In addition, our direct connection via telemedicine with the Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute Stroke Center at the Texas Medical Center ensures that patients have every possible resource at hand for quick response and effective treatment.
Recovery from a stroke continues long after the return home from the hospital. Stroke rehabilitation is offered in conjunction with TIRR Memorial Hermann on either an inpatient or outpatient basis depending on the patient’s condition. The Stroke Rehabilitation Center at TIRR Memorial Hermann is specially designed to maximize outcomes for patients who have suffered a stroke.
Stroke rehabilitation services are also available at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital - Katy and TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation at Memorial City.
