World-Class Innovation
Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass
A highly skilled cardiovascular team at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center was the first to devise a digital archive system that gives physicians online access to catheterization images, ensuring faster, more accurate treatment. Today, that same team – Miguel Gomez, M.D., and Donald Gibson, M.D. – performs 98 percent of coronary artery bypass grafts off pump compared to a national average of 15 percent, totaling more than 2,000 off-pump CABGs. Patients who undergo off-pump bypass have better outcomes, including lower mortality and morbidity rates.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Cardiovascular surgeons at the Heart & Vascular Institute-Memorial City are leaders in robotic-assisted and minimally invasive cardiothoracic techniques. They performed the first robotic-assisted Heller myotomy in Texas and the first robotic-assisted multi-vessel mini-thoracotomy in Houston. Miguel Gomez, M.D., has performed more robotic-assisted cardiothoracic surgeries than any surgeon in the state of Texas.
Cardioverter Defibrillators
Alexander F. Drtil, M.D., implanted Houston’s first Lumos DR-T implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Lumos is the first ICD that automatically transmits intracardiac electrograms (IEGMs) via the cellular telephone network and allows physicians to view these IEGMs on a secure web site at any time. The Heart Failure Monitor® displays vital signs that are important predictors of heart failure, enabling continuous monitoring regardless of where the patient is.
