Prostatectomy, or surgical removal of the prostate, is the most common treatment for prostate cancer. Our surgeons use the latest techniques to provide more options than ever for men who want to control their cancer while maintaining quality of life.
Some cancers require traditional open surgery, but surgeons are increasingly able to perform minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery, for shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.
If your physician recommends surgery, you may be a candidate for this new, less-invasive approach. Robotic-assisted surgery integrates robotics, computer technology and surgical skill to simplify surgery and make it less traumatic. Learn about the benefits of robotic-assisted prostate removal.
Traditional radical prostatectomy
In some cases, the conventional method of radical prostatectomy, an open surgical procedure, provides the optimum chance for a cure. If your physicians determine this is your treatment of choice, rest assured the skilled surgeons at Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Texas Medical Center will bring the highest level of expertise and experience to your procedure.
Though not a standard form of treatment for prostate cancer, chemotherapy may be used with recurring forms of cancer being treated with hormonal therapy. Some clinical trials are evaluating the value of chemotherapy prior to radiation or surgical treatment.
Radiation therapy may be used as the sole form of treatment for early stages of prostate cancer or for those patients who are not candidates for surgery. Radiation therapy may also be used in addition to surgery in more advanced stages. Types of therapy include external-beam radiation and interstitial implantation of radioisotopes. Forms of therapy are dependent upon the stage of the cancer and the intended purpose of treatment.
Clinical trials test new therapies to find better ways to treat cancer and help cancer patients. Through Memorial Hermann’s association with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Vanguard Urologic Research Foundation, we often have access to leading-edge clinical trials. Your treatment team will discuss possible options with you.
