Adult Volunteer Program

The Adult Program is best suited for long-term volunteers (18 years old or older) that want to serve the Hospital and its patients.

  • Commitment: Adult Program volunteers must be able to serve one four-hour shift per week for at least one year.
  • Application: All potential volunteers who can meet the above commitment are asked to fill out an online application located on this webpage. Please do not apply for the Adult Volunteer Program if you are not able to make the year-long commitment.
  • Interview: Volunteer staff will review and select candidates based on their applications in order to set up a one-on-one interview to be completed in person. If you are selected to be a part of the Adult Volunteer Program, you will be asked to complete an online background check as well as pass a general health screen which is provided at no cost to you by our organization.
  • Orientation: All potential volunteers must pass the background check, health screen and interview process before attending an orientation. Once completed, a coordinator will assign the candidate to an upcoming orientation. Orientations are held biweekly and last no more than three hours. Individuals will learn about the Organization, what it means to volunteer, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Training: Each volunteer will receive training at their assigned area before beginning volunteer work with a Hospital unit or department.

College Volunteer Program

We are excited to announce the creation of our College Volunteer Program is best suited for full-time college students (ages 18-24) interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It is a twelve week program offered during both fall and spring semesters, requiring the college student to serve one four hour shift each week, not missing any assignments.

  • Commitment: The College Volunteer Program requires the student to be enrolled in an accredited higher education institution full-time, attend the mandatory orientation and to serve at least four hours every week, not missing any shifts during the College Volunteer Program (excluding holidays and breaks).
  • Application: All volunteers who can meet the above commitment are asked to fill out an online application which will is made available on this webpage. Please do not apply for the College Volunteer Program if you are not able to make the commitment.
  • Interview: Volunteer staff will review and select candidates based on their applications in order to set up a one-on-one interview to be completed in person.   • Training: Each student will receive one-the-job training in their assigned placements by Memorial Hermann Southwest staff during their first official day of volunteering.
  • Volunteer: Students will volunteer a minimum of four service hours per week throughout the twelve week program. Recommendation letters are provided to those students who meet all Program requirements.

Summer Junior Volunteer Program

 

The Summer Junior Volunteer Program is for high school students 16-19 years old. It is a seven week program that will take place July – August 2019. Students who will turn 16 after June 1st will need to apply for the 2020 Summer Junior Volunteer Program. Please note that this program is highly competitive.

 

  • Commitment: Program participants must attend a mandatory orientation. They will volunteer for two four hour shifts for a total of eight hours weekly throughout the seven week program.
  • Application: All potential volunteers who can meet the above commitment must fill out an online application.
  • Acceptance: Final selections of program participants will be made by the end of May.
  • Orientation: All potential volunteers must have an interview, pass a background check and show proof of a negative TB test done in the past 12 months in order to receive an invitation to attend an orientation session. Program participants will learn about the organization, hospital policies, rules and regulations, and what it means to volunteer at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.
  • Training: Program participants will receive on the job training in their assigned placements on their first official day of volunteering. All MHSW volunteers must wear uniforms while working; they will be available for purchase at the orientation session.
  • Volunteer: Program participants will volunteer for two four hour shifts for a maximum of eight service hours per week throughout the seven week program. Certificates of completion will be provided to those who meet all program requirements. Recommendation letters will be written on a case by case basis depending upon several criterion, including staff reviews, attendance, punctuality and adherence to all program rules and regulations. While we understand that family commitments may occur during the program, letters will only be given to those who complete 48 hours of volunteering. Those scheduled to volunteer on July 4th may make up their shifts on a day approved by the Volunteer Coordinator.
