Cancer Center
From routine cancer screenings to complex treatment, the Cancer Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center brings together world-class skill, leading-edge technology and the most modern care available. We offer a continuum of diagnostic, treatment and support services designed with the needs of cancer patients in mind. Our affiliation with The University of Texas Medical School gives you access to clinical trials and leading-edge treatments and procedures. The physicians at the Cancer Center have been trained at highly regarded institutions. Many of our oncology nurses have completed national certification in oncology nursing and earned the credential OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse), the gold standard for oncology nurses. Oncology nurse navigators are strategically located throughout the Memorial Hermann System and are available to help cancer patients transition from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. Patients are then able to traverse their cancer pathway more easily and focus on recovery and healing. In addition to highly personalized physical care, the care team at the Cancer Center also provides emotional support during the entire course of each patient’s treatment. Dietitians and social workers support the physicians and nurses, assisting patients through recovery and healing. The Cancer Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is credentialed as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Back to top Our support services include: Minimally Invasive Surgical Options The experienced surgeons affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center provide an array of surgical options to treat cancer. Minimally invasive surgical alternatives offer benefits over traditional techniques, including a shorter hospital stay, less scarring, faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities. Back to top Minimally invasive surgical options include: Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center put the region’s first Leksell Gamma Knife® into operation in 1993. Since then, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and medical physicists have used it to treat more than 1,800 patients for a variety of brain and neck tumors. For candidates who qualify, noninvasive Gamma Knife radiosurgery virtually eliminates the risk of hemorrhage or infection and minimizes damage to other vital structures. Long-term studies have shown favorable success rates, and mortality from the procedure itself is zero. The treatment is generally a one-day, outpatient procedure. Most patients return to normal activities 24 hours after the procedure. Robotic-Assisted Surgery Robotic-assisted surgery integrates robotics, computer technology and surgical skill to simplify a number of existing surgeries, providing surgeons with the flexibility of traditional open surgery while operating through tiny incisions. Radiofrequency Tumor Ablation Certain patients with tumors less than 5 centimeters who are not candidates for tumor resection may choose a microwave technique that “cooks” tumors with a radiofrequency generator. Each tumor is given about 15 minutes of active ablation.
