Neuroscience Center

Kevin Gaffney, M.D.
The Neuroscience Center at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital offers residents of north Harris County and Montgomery County access to the highest quality treatment for neurological disorders that can be achieved in a community setting.

Using state-of-the-art technology, our team can diagnose and treat a wide range of neurological disorders and conditions, including complex brain and spine surgery and neurotrauma. The Center can also treat other serious problems such as aneurysms, tumors and strokes.

Our multidisciplinary team led by Kevin Gaffney, M.D., includes neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, experienced critical care nurses, a nurse practitioner trained in neurology and other specialized medical support personnel.

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands employs state-of-the-art equipment to provide the highest-quality care. Our technology for diagnostic and surgical imaging includes a Stealth Navigation System, a PET/CT scanner, a 3 Tesla MRI and a 64 Slice CT Scanner. Neurosurgeons use a Stealth Station navigation system to pinpoint the exact location of brain tumors to within a millimeter and observe a virtual three-dimensional image of the brain. This data helps surgeons operate more successfully and efficiently.

A 12-bed surgical intensive care unit is used for patients who have undergone neurological surgeries.

At Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, we offer programs and procedures to treat neurological disorders and conditions at a level not typically found outside metropolitan centers. Our scope of services includes the diagnosis and/or treatment of:

Diagnostic Services

We treat patients experiencing a broad range of neurological disorders in all stages, from the earliest symptoms through established disease. With PET/CT scan and MRI we are capable of advanced spectroscopic and diffusion tensor imaging with tractotomy, and can perform all the other useful diagnostic services.

  • Angiography
  • Biplane Angiography
  • CT 64 Slice Angiography
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Evoked Potentials
  • MRI 3 Tesla
  • Pet/CT scan
  • Stealth Navigation

Once a diagnosis is made, the medical team employs the most advanced treatment options available. We are experienced in the appropriate use of aggressive therapies for treatment of the most severe cases.

Stroke Center

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission (TJC) for Primary Stroke Centers. Our stroke center is among fewer than 50 accredited primary stroke centers in Texas, and the first in Montgomery County reflecting the hospital’s commitment to providing acute stroke patients with leading treatments, including new clot-dissolving drugs.

The Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Stroke Center has earned a State of Texas Level 2 designation as a Primary Stroke Center. Patients also benefit from the hospital’s close affiliation with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, which is recognized as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission (TJC) and a Level I Comprehensive Stroke Center by the State of Texas. For stroke patients in the Montgomery County area, quality care close by can mean the difference between a full recovery and a life-changing event.

A stroke support group also meets at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. For more information, please call 713-222-CARE or 281-364-5959.

Spine Surgery

Juan Ortega-Barnett, M.D.
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, in association with the Mischer Neuroscience Institute (MNI) at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, is thrilled to announce the addition of affiliated neurosurgeon Juan Ortega-Barnett, M.D. Dr. Ortega finished his neurological training in Pittsburgh, Pa., and went on to complete a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is fully trained in spinal and cranial surgery and performs a broad spectrum of neurological procedures.

When to Seek Neurosurgical Spine Care

Surgery may be necessary for some people with chronic back pain, especially when bed rest, medication and other conservative therapies aren’t effective. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands offers expert care for a wide range of debilitating back problems. Treatment focuses on relieving pain and preserving range of motion, while minimizing surgical trauma and promoting a fast recovery.

“New treatments and technologies are being developed all the time for patients who need spine surgery,” says Tamara Herschmann, R.N., the hospital’s surgical services director. “We’re committed to keeping pace with these innovations so we can continually offer our patients new options for their care.”

Some of the surgeries Dr. Ortega specializes include:
  • Minimally invasive spinal and cranial
  • Spinal decompression and fusion
  • Cranial nerve
  • Peripheral nerve
  • Brain and spinal tumor
  • Brain aneurysm and arterial venous malformation
  • Vagal nerve stimulators for epilepsy Hydrocephalus
  • Arnold Chiari
  • Head and spine trauma
  • Hydrocephalus
People of All Ages Can Benefit from Surgical Treatments

The elderly are not the only ones who suffer from back pain. Young people, especially those who are very athletic, often have pinched nerves, herniated disks and stress fractures from repetitive activities that put stress on the back. Many conditions get better in time on their own or with conservative measures. But it’s important for young people with any neurological problem to consult an expert, because some untreated conditions can cause permanent damage and interfere with normal development.

Head Injury Treatment

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital has the only designated trauma center along the Interstate 45 corridor between The Texas Medical Center in Houston and the City of Dallas – a stretch of more than 200 miles. Certified as a Level IV trauma center, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands is equipped and staffed to handle many types of emergencies, including head injuries that involve neurological damage.

More About Spine Surgery

A multitude of neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital offer a range of treatments for disorders of the spinal column and spinal cord, including degenerative conditions, trauma, infections, congenital disorders and tumors.

Surgical techniques include minimally invasive, endoscopic approaches to help reduce postoperative pain, speed recovery, shorten hospital stays and reduce disability. New technologies and minimally invasive techniques include degenerative disk and spine fracture repair and vertebroplasty, a procedure in which bone cement is injected to mechanically strengthen a fractured vertebra.
