Our neuromuscular disorders and multiple trauma program treats patients with conditions such as: Parkinson’s Disease, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, post-polio (polio) and multiple sclerosis. Adult and adolescent patients with neuromuscular disorders and multiple trauma benefit from the coordinated and specialized services offered by the interdisciplinary team at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas. The rehabilitation team is highly skilled in managing the complexity of medical, physical and psychosocial issues that these patients experience.
To treat these conditions, staff physicians work closely with referring physicians to develop customized patient care plans. Our interdisciplinary team of nurses, therapists, psychologists and social workers provides comprehensive treatment programs that are individualized to each patient’s unique set of impairments, to ensure success after the patient returns to home and community.
Neuromuscular Disorders
Rehabilitation services are often overlooked for persons with neuromuscular disorders – especially those with chronic neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease – because of the irreversible nature of these conditions. However, rehabilitation services have proven to be invaluable for many of these patients, providing them with improved function, mobility, strength and the confidence to tackle the challenges of everyday life.
Rehabilitation gives patients the tools they need to address physical problems such as neurogenic bladder and spasticity, and cognitive impairments such as slowed thinking, problems with memory and poor concentration.
Neuromuscular disorders commonly seen at TIRR include:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Guillain Barré Syndrome
- Chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy
- Post-polio syndrome
- West Nile virus
- Inflammatory myopathies (polymyositis, dermatomyositis, inclusion body myositis)
- Other neuropathies and myopathies
Multiple Trauma and Other Non-neurologic Diagnoses
TIRR also provides services to adults and adolescents with multiple trauma and other non-neurologic diagnoses who will benefit from the coordinated and specialized skills of rehabilitation specialists.
These diagnoses include:
- Multiple fractures and injuries
- Crush injuries
- Collagen vascular diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and systemic sclerosis
Patients in this program require medical management, intensive therapy, education and training to improve strength, endurance and functional abilities.
