TIRR Memorial Hermann Inpatient Program for Adolescents
The TIRR Memorial Hermann Inpatient Program for Adolescents has a highly specialized staff of physicians and rehabilitation professionals who practice a unified, patient-focused and interdisciplinary approach to care. The program for adolescents focuses on facilitating function and independence by addressing physical, social, psychological, cognitive and communicative needs. By placing a high priority on the involvement of family, we empower the family to solve problems, access resources and feel comfortable in providing care.
Adolescents with disabilities benefit from the continuity of care available to them within TIRR’s continuum of services. The continuum includes collaboration with the acute care hospital during the initial stages of injury or illness, the comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program, day rehabilitation program and outpatient rehabilitation. Some of the specialized services we offer for adolescents include:
Adolescents-only therapeutic group (activities include: music therapy, movies, cooking, board games, Nintendo Wii, football, basketball, outings such as – the Houston Rodeo, nail salons and nearby restaurants
Therapeutic outings to places such as local college campuses for return to school prep
Houston Independent School District (HISD) School Program
Transition with return to school after injury
Durable medical equipment (DME) professionals work with adolescents as they need to transition equipment to meet their growing needs
TIRR works directly with the Memorial Hermann Department of International Affairs to assist with the needs of international families.

Admission Criteria
Patients admitted to the Program for Children and Adolescents must be 13 years of age or older. On occasion, a child younger than 13 may be admitted, at the discretion of the attending physician. Children younger than 13 should weigh at least 50 kilograms (110 pounds). Children who are ventilator-dependent are not admitted if they are less than 13 years old.
TIRR Memorial Hermann Physician and Specialty Clinic

TIRR offers services that are available through many specialty clinics and programs staffed by physicians and a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. Services range from initial evaluation and diagnosis to follow-up care for maintenance of health. The Physician and Specialty Clinic meets the needs of individuals requiring initial or continuing rehabilitation: follow-up care, annual check-ups and other non-emergency medical problems. Persons who have not previously been treated in the TIRR Inpatient Program may also benefit from the services of the Physician and Specialty Clinic.

Admission Criteria
Patients ages 13 and older will be seen in the Physician and Specialty Clinic. On occasion, patients younger than 13 may be seen at the discretion of the attending physician.

TIRR Memorial Hermann Day Rehabilitation
TIRR Pediatric Day Rehabilitation is designed to meet the needs of children whose condition calls for the intensity of conventional inpatient rehabilitation, but does not require nursing care. The program is offered up to five days a week and is for children who need more intensive or specialized services than are available through outpatient therapies or home health services. The child will receive an integrated and intensive rehabilitation program in a clinical setting, combined with emotional support.

Admission Criteria
Patients are admitted from birth to 21 years of age.
Day Rehabilitation offers Challenge, a comprehensive community re-integration program for brain injury survivors. The program assists individuals in returning to community activities such as work, school or volunteering, or to a higher level of independence. Educational services prepare the high school and post-secondary school student to succeed in an educational environment. Therapy staff consults with school personnel about appropriate accommodations in the academic setting.
Services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, cognitive rehabilitation, neuropsychological treatment, counseling and vocational rehabilitation. TIRR Challenge Program can provide selected treatment to people whose predominant language is Spanish.

Admission Criteria
Patients 14 years of age or older are admitted.
TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation
TIRR Outpatient Rehabilitation provides comprehensive targeted pediatric outpatient rehabilitation services one to three days per week. Rehabilitation can contribute to improved functioning and quality of life for children or adolescents. The interdisciplinary team consists of speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and social workers.
