An hour after Karl Wiggins arrived at a local hospital near his home in Liberty following his first encounter with sudden cardiac death, he was transferred via Life Flight to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where sudden cardiac death struck him again. Doctors revived him, but they couldn’t figure out what was causing Wiggins, who had no medical history of health problems, to experience abnormal heart rhythms. On the day after his arrival at Memorial Hermann-TMC, Siddharth Mukerji, M.D., a cardiac electrophysiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute, studied Wiggins’ electrocardiogram—known as ECG—and noticed a pattern that pointed to Brugada syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes abnormal heart rhythms.
