Contaminated heroin responsible for alarming rate of overdose deaths

HOUSTON, TX (March10, 2014)

An increased number of heroin deaths is reaching such high numbers doctors are now warning their patients.

SAMHSA or The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has released an alert warning that this started in January 2014 with dozens of people dropping dead in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Vermont from a heroin overdose.

All the people dying unknowingly used heroin laced with Fentanyl.

"Fentanyl is a very potent opiate used by anesthesiologists. It's measured in micrograms. It's that potent," explains Dr. Mike Leath one of the Medical Directors at Memorial Hermann's Prevention And Recovery Center.
