Join Us in Supporting the Third Annual Christopher’s Heart Fun Run

TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER (February07, 2009)

Heart Fun RunMitochondria are small oval-shaped structures that are our cells' "power plants." Problems with mitochondrial function can cause a wide variety of symptoms in children, including developmental delay, nerve damage, muscle weakness, seizures, stroke and multiple organ failure.

Mitochondrial diseases are complex and difficult to identify. In collaboration with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, the Neurometabolic and Mitochondrial Clinic at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston is the only facility in the state with expertise in diagnosing and treating mitochondrial disorders.

To raise awareness of mitochondrial diseases, Children's Memorial Hermann is proud to sponsor the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) Houston Chapter's 3rd Annual Christopher's Heart Fun Run on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Sam Houston Park. The 8 a.m. event will feature a 5K run, walk and wheelchair race, as well as a 1-mile walk/run for children, live entertainment, food vendors and games. The first 100 children who register online will receive a free T-shirt. All proceeds from the event will fund research on mitochondrial diseases.

Register today to walk or run as a part of the Children's Memorial Hermann team on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Sam Houston Park.
