Kid's got the sniffles? Don't count on getting an antibiotic, doctors say

HOUSTON, TEXAS (November22, 2016)

When baby gets sick with an earache or sore throat, parents often bring them to the doctor seeking a fix. For decades, many doctors were happy to oblige, even when it wasn't entirely clear an antibiotic would help — because at least the drugs wouldn't hurt. As we enter the sick season, doctors and public health officials have a message for parents: You can bring your sick child in for a check up, but you might not leave with an antibiotic. There's good reason for that, said Dr. Michael Chang, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. "Up to half of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary," said Chang, assistant professor of pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.
