Local Nurse Honored for Leadership, Commitment to Nursing
HOUSTON, TX (November03,
Maryellen McGlothlin, RN, BSN, the administrative director for acute care services at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, was recently honored with a 2008 NurseWeek Excellence Award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions nurses make to their patients, each other, and the profession.
McGlothlin was among six Texas nurses who received awards in various categories ranging from clinical care and management to mentoring and advancing and leading the profession. McGlothlin was honored for excellence in community service.
After recognizing more nurses were retiring than joining the profession, McGlothlin reached out to local students to share with them the "great things nurses do each day." She started a student internship program, hiring high school students and training them to work as patient care assistants at Memorial Hermann Memorial City. She also coordinated clinical preceptorships with local nursing schools.
"I started these programs because I wanted to see growth in our profession," said McGlothlin. "I am passionate about my job and helping others and I wanted to share my passion with the next generation of caregivers."
The six winning nurses were chosen from 30 finalists. A panel of judges, comprised of regional nursing leaders, reviewed and ranked nominations submitted by the finalists' peers and colleagues. The regional winners, including McGlothlin, now have the opportunity to win an overall NurseWeek Nurse of the Year award, which will be announced by years end.
In addition to McGlothlin, Memorial Hermann Memorial City had two additional finalists - Kerry Davis, RN, BSN, CRRN in the category of Teaching and Page Percoski, RN III in the category of Mentoring.
McGlothlin resides in Spring Valley.
