Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center Receives Level II Trauma Center Verification
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (January09,
Memorial Hermann Health System has delivered on its promise to expand its advanced trauma network with today’s announcement that Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center received Level II trauma center verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
In 2016, Memorial Hermann pledged to upgrade trauma capabilities within its integrated network in order to provide access to high-quality trauma care to greater Houston and surrounding areas. The addition of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands’ Level II trauma center will provide immediate access to a higher level of trauma care to communities north of the Texas Medical Center (TMC).
“Several years ago, we recognized there was a need for higher level trauma centers in greater Houston,” said Josh Urban, senior vice president and CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands and Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital. “Montgomery County was identified as a fast growing community that could benefit immediately from an advanced level of care, so we began the pursuit of Level II trauma center verification at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.”
To receive the Level II trauma center verification, a hospital must undergo a rigorous review process and is required to have 24-hour availability of a medical team consisting of specially-trained healthcare providers who have expertise in the care of severely injured patients. Among the many requirements are intensive trauma education for staff, availability of sub-specialty services like orthopedics, neurosurgery and cardiovascular care, as well as physicians to handle major facial and hand injuries and rapid access to surgical care.
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands also upgraded its infrastructure, adding surgical and intensive care beds, as well as 3,400 square feet of space in its emergency center, including seven treatment rooms and three state-of-the-art trauma rooms. It also added a rooftop helipad that serves as an additional base for Memorial Hermann Life Flight®.
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands joins Memorial Hermann’s comprehensive network of trauma care, including the nationally-recognized Level I trauma center - the Memorial Hermann Red Duke Trauma Institute. In unique situations such as severe burns and pediatric trauma, Life Flight can quickly transport patients from Montgomery County and surrounding areas directly to the John S. Dunn Burn Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center or Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
“We’re proud of the strong team we have assembled to serve this growing community that has always relied on us for their health care needs,” said Timothy Hodges, M.D., trauma medical director at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. “We have been functioning as a Level II trauma center for more than a year, and today, we received the official stamp of approval. Residents can rest assured we are equipped to treat complex cases, from the onset of the trauma to post-acute rehabilitation right here in The Woodlands.”
To support patients throughout the entire care process, trauma patients needing post-acute rehabilitation can receive a wide array of rehabilitation services in the inpatient and outpatient settings at TIRR Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands, an extension of TIRR Memorial Hermann, a national leader in medical rehabilitation and research. Recently, TIRR Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International for a period of three years for its inpatient rehabilitation programs (adult). This recognition represents the highest level of rehabilitation facility accreditation awarded by CARF.
Soon joining Memorial Hermann The Woodlands will be Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, which recently embarked on its journey toward earning a Level II trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons. As part of its advanced trauma network, Memorial Hermann also operates three Level IV trauma centers at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital and Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital and Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital both operate Level III trauma centers.
