Nurses who 'navigate' - a new field emerges in cancer care
HOUSTON (October03,
2017)
Angela
Sisk followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, Dorothy Robson, a registered
nurse, and earned a Bachelor's of Nursing in 1996, then a Master's of Nursing
in 2005. In her 20 years as a practicing nurse, they've all been spent as an
Oncology Nurse where she helps patients with cancer overcome, and sometimes
cope with succumbing to, the disease. Sisk is among a new breed of oncology
nurses called, "Nurse Navigators" at Memorial Hermann Cancer
Centerat Greater Heights on the North Loop near Ella Boulevard.
Sisk, along with four other nurses at Memorial Hermann, are the first in
Houston and some of the first in the nation to be certified by The Academy of
Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators, a national organization dedicated to
patient well-being during cancer treatment and recovery.
