Seven Memorial Hermann Hospitals Among Best in Nation for Women’s Services
HOUSTON, TX (June29,
The women's programs at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital collectively have been recognized among the top 5 percent in the nation for excellence in women's healthcare, gynecologic surgery and maternity care, according to a new report released by HealthGrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make informed healthcare decisions.
The report, HealthGrades 2012 Trends in Women's Health in American Hospitals also ranked Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center among the top 5 percent and top 10 percent in the nation respectively for gynecologic surgery, and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land received a five-star rating for maternity care.
"Memorial Hermann is pleased for its hospitals to be recognized for providing the highest quality women's care, gynecology and maternity care," said M. Michael Shabot, Chief Medical Officer for Memorial Hermann. "Our goal is perfect performance when it comes to providing quality care to our patients, and these HealthGrades awards are evidence we are succeeding in this mission."
Of the 4,783 acute care hospitals in the nation, the four Memorial Hermann hospitals along with 175 other hospitals received the 2012 HealthGrades Women's Health Excellence Award™, placing the hospitals in the top 5 percent of hospitals across the nation for excellence in women's healthcare.
The study examined hospitalization records from the MedPAR database in all 50 states for the years 2008 through 2010. It found the four hospitals along with the other recipients had women's mortality rates that were, on average, 42 percent lower than the poorest performers across nine diagnoses and procedures, and complication rates were, on average, 14 percent lower than the poorest performing hospitals across seven procedures. The procedures that were analyzed included: heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, coronary bypass surgery, peripheral vascular bypass, coronary interventional procedures, resection/replacement of abdominal aorta, carotid surgery, and valve replacement; total knee and hip replacement surgeries, spinal surgeries, and hip fracture repair.
The bottom line: If all of the nation's hospitals had outcomes among women at this level, nearly 40,000 women could have potentially survived their hospitalization and 19,000 women could have potentially avoided a major in-hospital complication.
In the same study, HealthGrades also named Memorial Hermann Northwest, Memorial Hermann Southeast, Memorial Hermann Southwest, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands and Memorial Hermann Katy among the top 5 percent and Memorial Hermann Memorial City among the top 10 percent in the nation for gynecologic surgery, including hysterectomies. Healthgrades found that women who undergo gynecologic surgery at these 5-Star rated hospitals experience 56 percent fewer complications than lower-performing hospitals. In fact, in the 19 states studied, 9.2 percent of women undergoing gynecologic surgery experienced an in-hospital complication. If all hospitals performed at the level of these Memorial Hermann hospitals, more than 37,000 complications could have potentially been prevented.
Also recognized was Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, which received a 5-Star rating for maternity care, while Memorial Hermann Northwest, Memorial Hermann Southeast, Memorial Hermann Southwest and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands ranked among the top 5 percent in the nation for maternity care. HealthGrades found that women who give birth at these hospitals experience 62 percent fewer complications than lower-performing hospitals.
"Knowing that a hospital has earned a high rating for maternity care and safety can provide peace of mind to expectant mothers and their families," added Dr. Shabot.
For years, Memorial Hermann has been committed to providing women and their babies with the highest possible quality care in the Houston region. Services that distinguish Memorial Hermann's maternity care and women's health programs from its competitors include:
