Survey: More than half of parents save and share leftover antibiotics

HOUSTON (November19, 2018)

Nearly half of parents say they've saved leftover antibiotics that were prescribed to their children, according to a new study - and of those, nearly three-quarters then gave those medications to someone else without consulting a doctor. "I just don't think it's a good practice," said Dr. Michael Chang, a UTHealth pediatric infectious disease specialist who is affiliated with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. Chang said he understands why it happens. It takes time and money to make a doctor's appointment and get a prescription filled - so when someone in the household feels under the weather, it's tempting to just reach for the antibiotics in the medicine cabinet.
