Memorial Hermann hospitals ranked among the Best in the City and State
HOUSTON (July 18, 2013) - For the 24th consecutive year, TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital ranks as one of the "Best Rehabilitation Hospitals" in America, according to U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals rankings for 2013-14. TIRR Memorial Hermann ranked #3 nationally in rehabilitation.
"Our consistent ranking as one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the country is a testament to dedicated professionals at TIRR Memorial Hermann who commit daily to making our patients' lives better," said Carl E. Josehart, CEO of TIRR Memorial Hermann. "While we are honored to be recognized as one of the three best rehabilitation hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the acknowledgment that means the most to us is that of our patients and their families who place their trust in our hospital and staff."
Founded in 1953, TIRR Memorial Hermann is one of the country's first rehabilitation hospitals. It has grown to a 119-bed hospital focusing on rehabilitation and cutting-edge research to treat people with a range of disabilities from complex conditions such as brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple trauma and amputation, to rehabilitation for conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, post-polio syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
"Every day, the staff at TIRR works tirelessly to provide its patients with the best rehabilitative care possible," said Dan Wolterman, President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System. "We are extremely proud of the recognition that TIRR continues to earn. Our patients and their families can expect nothing but the highest level of care and compassion when they choose TIRR Memorial Hermann."
In addition to its top national ranking, TIRR Memorial Hermann also ranks #5 among all hospitals in the Houston metro area, and is rated the 8th best hospital in Texas.
Several Memorial Hermann hospitals also were recognized in the 2013-14 U.S. News & World Report ratings. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center ranked #4 in the Houston metro area and #7 in Texas; it also rated 49th nationally in nephrology. Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital ranked #7 in the Houston, and 21st in Texas; and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center ranked #8 in Houston and 24th in the state. Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital ranked nationally in neurology and neurosurgery (#47), nephrology (#32), and gastroenterology and GI surgery (#50).
Memorial Hermann hospitals also were recognized as "high-performing" in certain specialties, including:
- Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center: Cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
- Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center: Orthopedics, gynecology, neurology & neurosurgery and pulmonology.
- Memorial Hermann Northwest: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; nephrology; pulmonology, gynecology and diabetes & endocrinology.
U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation's top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers.
"A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of," said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. "Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region's best. Just 3 percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty."
U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands August 27.
