Unexpected delivery leads to a Happy Mother’s Day

CYPRESS (May11, 2017)

Gomez FamilyOne Houston woman will be celebrating a very Happy Mother’s Day after delivering her baby, unexpectedly, on the day Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital opened its doors. Jovita Ornelas-Gomez planned to deliver her baby at a hospital in Houston, but the baby wouldn’t wait.

“I was having contractions while at my sister-in-law’s home in Cypress, but my water hadn’t broken yet. When the contractions started getting closer together, it was rush hour. I knew there was no way to get downtown in time,” remembers Gomez.

Gomez and her sister-in-law went to the newly opened Memorial Hermann Cypress, where she was met by attentive staff and Sean Blackwell, M.D., a maternal fetal medicine physician affiliated with Memorial Hermann Cypress and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGovern Medical School at UT Health.

“Most women have a plan about how they’d like their delivery process to go. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always follow our plans,” says Dr. Blackwell. “Memorial Hermann Cypress has highly trained staff and affiliated physicians who are ready to take care of any pregnant woman, whether she expected to show up that day or not.”

“I was nervous, but I could tell they were working hard to make sure everything went smoothly. During the delivery, everyone was excited. They kept cheering me on!” says Gomez.

Shortly before midnight, Gomez delivered baby Jenna Rose coming in at 6 lbs, 6 oz.

“I was not only happy to have a safe delivery, but also that my husband was able to make it to Cypress in time to experience the birth. We are thankful to both Dr. Blackwell and the hospital staff members who made this unexpected experience a good one,” says Gomez.

The Birthing Center at Memorial Hermann Cypress features private labor-delivery-recovery suites equipped with the latest technology and a “couplet care” model so that mother and baby are cared for together following delivery.
