New Cardiovascular Management to Expand Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast

Houston, Texas, Memorial Hermann Southeast has appointed new leaders for its cardiovascular program as it prepares to offer enhanced services by March 1.

Surendra K. Jain, M.D., is medical director of cardiovascular services, while Jeffrey A. Scoggins, RCIS, is director of cardiology.

“Memorial Hermann Southeast has provided expert diagnostic cardiology for years, and now we are moving toward performing advanced interventional procedures to treat some of the conditions we diagnose,” Scoggins explained. “We are continuing our commitment to provide this community with exceptional patient care that is easily accessed.”

Diagnostic cardiology includes tests such as electrocardiograms, echocardiograms and stress tests. The interventional cardiology procedures that Memorial Hermann Southeast will be offering include balloon angioplasty and stent placement, two procedures used to open blocked arteries.

“I am excited to be involved as the community benefits from this hospital growing and expanding its advanced services,” said Dr. Jain.

To accommodate this service expansion, Memorial Hermann Southeast recently opened two state-of-the-art catheterization labs with room to add a third. The new labs feature top-of-the-line technology, including a low-radiation X-ray system, Scoggins said.

Dr. Jain has treated Houston patients for more than two decades since completing his cardiology fellowship at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. He also served residencies in internal medicine and psychiatry in New York after earning his medical degree. As a clinical assistant professor, he teaches at both The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine.

Before joining Memorial Hermann Southeast, Scoggins served as administrative director of heart and vascular services at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. He has also worked in cardiology management positions in El Paso and Little Rock. Scoggins holds a bachelor’s degree from Lamar University in Beaumont and gained his registered cardiovascular-invasive specialist certification after completing medical training at El Centro College in Dallas.
