New Cancer Center Opened by Memorial Hermann Texas
Medical Center
Houston,
Texas –Advanced treatment, a highly-skilled team of cancer
specialists, a comforting environment, and supportive personal care
are prominent features of the new Memorial Hermann Cancer Center Texas
Medical Center.
Located on the
second floor of the University of Texas Professional Building, the
new center was created with patient convenience in mind. A full array
of multidisciplinary services are offered in one location—expanded
treatment facilities, additional medical oncology staff, pain management,
radiation therapy and surgical consultation as well as nutritional
and laboratory services. In addition to the full range of diagnostic
and treatment services, the center also offers genetic counseling and
a prospective patient planning conference where doctors convene to
determine the best option of treatment for each patient.
Designed as
a hub for both medical and surgical oncology, the new cancer center
offers consultations with surgical oncologists specializing in colorectal,
breast, prostate, lung, pancreas and spine malignancies as well as
plastic and reconstructive surgery specialists.
A dedicated,
comprehensive breast care program at the new center guides patients
from diagnosis through treatment in one location. A state-of-the
art screening and diagnostic facility provides quality health services
with board-certified and dedicated breast radiologists. New
patients can be seen by a breast specialist in less than a week for
evaluation and management of abnormal mammograms or biopsy proven
malignancies.
Patient care is
enhanced by state-of-the-art technologies such as the innovative
point-of-care-testing machine that allows rapid bed-side evaluation
of blood count (CBC) and other vital parameters. The center also
incorporates outpatient clinics for bone marrow biopsy and fine-needle
aspiration (FNA).
At the forefront of research to develop new and more effective treatments
through clinical trials, the new center offers the most advanced treatments
available.
“Our cancer
center features the hallmarks Memorial Hermann patients have come
to expect, putting patients first and supporting them with advanced
treatments and a team of skilled caregivers,” said Dr. Emily
Robinson, the center’s
medical director and Assistant Professor of Surgery at The University
of Texas Medical School at Houston.
The Memorial Hermann
Cancer Center is a source of the integrated patient support that
plays a vital role in healing. The center can arrange professional
home healthcare assistance for patients who need it. Also offered
are psychological services, including an on-site Reach Recovery Program,
a cancer survivor support group sponsored by the American Cancer
Society, featuring individual as well as family sessions.
Patients
may also take advantage of an upgraded resource and education center,
a specialized library developed to help patients research their disease
and find additional support services through literature, videos and
Internet access.
Cancer detection and prevention services, including colon , breast
and prostate screenings, are also available through the center. Appointments
can be made directly by patients without the need for a prior visit
to a specialist.
Memorial Hermann Cancer Center Texas Medical Center is committed
to setting the standard for timely and personal service, with shorter
waiting times and a “patient navigator” nursing approach. “We
are committed to giving our patients a feeling of continuity. Registered
nurses accompany patients from diagnosis through discharge, providing
consistent primary nursing and support,” said
Dr. Robinson.
