Houston, Texas – Last June, Memorial Hermann and baseball great Roger Clemens announced an aggressive plan to develop the largest, most comprehensive, medically-based sports program in the Southwest.  The Roger Clemens Institute began operations within Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, while Clemens and Institute officials focused on building a permanent facility, developing programs and services, and recruiting world-class sports medicine physicians. The Institute provides a multi-disciplinary approach by combining advanced sports medicine, rehabilitation and orthopedic care with medically-based human performance research and protocols.

Today, at the Rogers Clemens Institute Expo at the Chevron Houston Marathon, Clemens and Memorial Hermann President & CEO Dan Wolterman announced the achievement of the Institute’s first major milestones.

“This week, the Roger Clemens Institute opens the doors of its outstanding new facilities inside the towering Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza,” said Memorial Hermann President & CEO Dan Wolterman. “Physicians will be seeing marathoners from this weekend’s race in clinic there beginning on Monday. At the same time, we are introducing a rare partnership that brings together two nationally recognized medical school sports medicine programs under the Institute.

The collaboration between Memorial Hermann, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) will take the Roger Clemens Institute to the next level.”

Clemens joined Wolterman on the Expo stage to make the announcement. “I’m proud that the Roger Clemens Institute at Memorial Hermann has partnered with both of Houston’s outstanding medical schools and faculty,” he said. “I have the greatest respect for all of these people. This is just more evidence of our intent to build a sports medicine program that will be unrivaled anywhere in the country.”

Under the agreement, Baylor College of Medicine and the UT Medical School will bring the strengths of their respective sports medicine programs to the Roger Clemens Institute.  BCM’s Walter Lowe, M.D., Thomas Clanton, M.D., from the UT Medical School, and Mark Adickes, M.D. will serve as medical directors of the Institute. Medical staff will include faculty from both institutions.

"I am thrilled that this agreement was reached between the UT Medical School, Memorial Hermann and the Roger Clemens Institute," said UT-Houston President James T. Willerson, M.D.  "I could not be more pleased that Dr. Clanton serves on our faculty and that he will be extending his expertise to the Roger Clemens Institute, an arrangement which reinforces the strength of our continuing partnership with Memorial Hermann."

“Baylor College of Medicine believes in the importance of collaboration,” said Dr. Peter G. Traber, president and CEO of BCM. “In combining the expertise of these prominent Texas Medical Center institutions, the Roger Clemens Institute will offer athletes – both professional and amateur – the top talent in sports medicine. We are pleased to be part of another program that builds on giving patients the best care available by working together.”
In addition to sports medicine specialists, the Institute boasts a multidisciplinary team of doctors from the fields of cardiology, neurology, sport psychology, and others. It is connected to Memorial Hermann’s network of outstanding, community-based sports medicine and rehabilitation programs and physicians.

The Roger Clemens Institute, which prepares athletes – recreational, competitive, and professional – to compete at their highest level while preventing and treating injuries, opens to patients in its new offices on Mon., January 15.  The state-of-the-art facility is located on the 16th floor of the new 30-story Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza.
