Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital to Open New Ambulatory Medicine Center

Facility offers comprehensive outpatient rehab services, diabetes education and more

Houston, Texas, May 19, 2003 -- Even before Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital officially opens its new South Tower this summer, hospital officials are introducing a new facility that offers comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, speech, aquatic and hand therapy, diabetes education and more.

The 16,000-square-foot Ambulatory Medicine Center, set to open in July, will present patients with a one-stop, total return-to-wellness program personalized to fit their lifestyles. "Diabetes patients, for example, learn how to manage the disease and maintain a nutritional program that meets their health requirements," said center director Julie Moore. "Should they injure themselves, our clinicians can offer wound care, exercise under the supervision of a therapist and aquatic therapy after the wound has healed."

Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital officially opens its new South Tower this July.

The Ambulatory Medicine Center's hand therapy program offers a range of treatment options and a Hough hand table for specialty exercises. The program provides care for conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome and other forms of cumulative trauma, osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, flexor/extensor tendon lacerations and more.

Aquatic therapy and rehabilitation, available in the center's 27-by-10-foot pool, can speed recovery and enhance treatment for patients with a variety of diagnoses, such as lumbar and cervical spine disorders, general musculoskeletal injuries and neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. "The buoyancy of water allows earlier movement for people who are unable to tolerate land-based therapy due to pain, weakness or weight-bearing limitations," said Moore.

The pool can accommodate two to four patients at a time with a one-to-one or one-to-two therapist-to-patient ratio. It features a state-of-the-art treadmill for cardiac conditioning and gait training, as well as a hydraulic lift to help non-ambulatory patients enter and leave. "Aquatic exercise also increases relaxation, reduces pain and muscle spasm and enhances physiological well-being," noted Moore.

The center offers an array of therapy services that includes treatment for back and neck disorders, orthopedic injuries, joint replacements and more. The outpatient therapy area features a large exercise and cardio room equipped with treadmills, bicycles and sitting/stepping machine. Certified through the Arthritis Foundation, the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) program includes exercises to improve flexibility, strength and cardiovascular fitness. Participants also receive educational information on exercise and wellness.

The Ambulatory Medicine Center will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. It is located at the east end of the first floor of the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital South Tower, 1635 North Loop West at Ella Blvd. For more information or to schedule a tour, call 713-867-3350.
