Roger Clemens Partners with Memorial Hermann to Advance Sports Medicine & Human Performance Program

Houston, Texas, June 20, 2006 – Memorial Hermann and baseball great Roger Clemens today announced the next step in their respective long-term sports strategies -- a multi-pronged partnership that will introduce world-class sports medicine research and programs and develop sports performance training facilities and camps across the greater Houston area. The unique venture will bring to Houston the largest, most comprehensive, medically-based sports program in the Southwest.

Roger Clemens visited Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital where he signing autographs and handed out Astros t-shirts to young patients and their families. Roger and Debbie Clemens have pledged $3 million toward a new pediatric wing and therapy room at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Hendricks Sports Management pledged another $750,000.

“It’s the right time and the right opportunity,” Clemens said of the partnership. The star Astros pitcher and seven-time Cy Young Award-winner noted: “Throughout my professional career and my life with Debbie and our four sons, I’ve tried to promote the importance of family, good health and fitness. I admire Memorial Hermann for its commitment to the health of the community. Together, I believe we can build an amazing program that will benefit not only professional athletes but youth and families as well. I look forward to being very hands-on in the development of the facilities and the programs and share Memorial Hermann’s interest in funding outreach for kids.”

In addition to the Institute relationship, Roger and Debbie Clemens have personally pledged $3 million toward a new pediatric wing and therapy room at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Hendricks Sports Management pledged another $750,000.

Memorial Hermann President & CEO Dan Wolterman noted Clemens’ legacy of excellence and love of Houston.  “In our conversations with Roger, I was struck by his desire to be a true partner to us in building the kind of program that lives up to his name.  We have a dynamic medical staff and administrative leadership team in place and we’re recruiting others. With Roger’s input as an elite athlete and businessperson, the Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine & Human Performance will be extremely well-positioned to perform leading-edge research and provide clinical care and training to meet the needs of generations of athletes to come.”

The first facility, the Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine & Human Performance, will open in January 2007 adjacent to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.  The state-of-the-art facility is now under construction on the 16th floor of the new 30-story Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza. It will combine advanced sports medicine, rehabilitation and orthopedic care with medically-based human performance research and protocols. The Institute will prepare athletes – from high school and college players to elite professionals and weekend athletes – to compete at their highest level while preventing and treating injuries.

Over the next several years, the Roger Clemens Institute at Memorial Hermann will develop two additional sports medicine and human performance centers in Houston suburbs, where athletes of all ages and levels can benefit from its programs and facilities.  Also in development is the Roger Clemens Academy, which will offer baseball camps for blue chip high school and college athletes from across the country.

Memorial Hermann is also the official healthcare provider for the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and Rice University.
