Memorial Hermann Hospital's Kidney, Urology Programs Recognized as among America's Best
Houston,
Texas, July 8, 2005 – Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center has been ranked among the country's top providers of treatment for kidney disease and urology in U.S. News & World Report's annual “ America's Best Hospitals” edition.
Of more than 6,000 hospitals in the United States, Memorial Hermann is one of only 176 listed in any of the survey's 17 categories. Memorial Hermann ranked 41st in kidney disease treatment and 49th in urology. The rankings will be published in U.S. News & World Report's July 18 issue, on newsstands next week.
The magazine scores the quality of inpatient care based on each hospital's teaching status, advanced technological capabilities, patient volumes, reputation with physicians, mortality statistics, nursing proficiency and other measures relevant to each specialty.
“Since Memorial Hermann Hospital is the primary teaching facility for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, our patients benefit from innovative research and treatment provided by doctors from both UT and private practices,” said Chief Medical Officer William T. Peruzzi, MD. “We are pleased by this continued recognition of our kidney disease program and the addition of our urology specialty to this year's rankings.”
Chronic kidney disease affects more than 7.5 million adults, with diabetes and high blood pressure creating particular risks. Since the 1980s, doctors associated with Memorial Hermann Hospital and The UT Medical School at Houston have been at the forefront of developing drugs that help prevent a patient's body from rejecting transplanted kidneys. Surgeons at Memorial Hermann Hospital have performed more than 2,500 kidney transplants.
The Urology and Continence Center at Memorial Hermann Hospital offers comprehensive treatment of female urinary incontinence and pelvic reconstruction as well as male sexual dysfunction and infertility. UT urological surgeons also offer minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgical options at Memorial Hermann to treat cancer and upper urinary tract abnormalities.
