Memorial Hermann Hospital Among the Best at Treating Kidney Disease

Houston, Texas, July 17, 2003 -- Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center has again earned high marks in U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of the nation’s best hospitals.

As an increasing number of patients are diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure, the publication’s 2003 America’s Best Hospitals rankings shows Memorial Hermann Hospital answering the call as one of the top-50 in the nation for the treatment of kidney disease. Memorial Hermann ranked 42nd in that area of specialty care. It received a score of 41.3 in the U.S. News Index, which combines a hospital’s reputation, mortality rate, number of procedures and other measures to summarize quality of care.

“We are gratified to have our internationally renowned kidney disease program recognized by this distinction,” said Medical Director Steve Allen, M.D. “The program has consistently developed and implemented therapy that has become the standard of care. We are excited about the even greater accomplishments still to come from this highly talented service.”

With 60 medical/surgical beds, Memorial Hermann Hospital has greater inpatient capacity than most other hospitals that provide kidney disease services. It also scored five out of five for technology services.

Other Memorial Hermann Hospital scores from the 2003 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals rankings for treatment of kidney disease:

  • Mortality ratio: 0.57
  • Discharges: 734
  • Ratio of nurses to beds: 1.23
