News Releases Memorial
Hermann Junior Cycling Team Places Fourth In National Competition Houston, Texas, July
28, 2003 -- There’s no doubt that Ethan Bing is a source
of pride for his father, Dr. Mark Bing. But on a hot July day he
gave the Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital
doctor something to beam about. Ethan was one of more than 140 cyclists
from around the nation to compete in the USCF Junior National Track
Cycling Championships, sponsored by Memorial Hermann, at the Alkek
Velodrome July 9-12, 2003. He placed third in the Junior Men category.
Teammate Lawson Craddock placed fourth.
Out of 16 total
categories, the Memorial Hermann Junior Cycling Team presented well
in this national competition. In Team
Pursuit, Memorial
Hermann placed fourth in the nation – the highest placed team
from Texas. Memorial Hermann also placed fourth in Team Sprint, as
well as breaking the state track record in this category. Another notable
contestant on the Memorial Hermann team, Daniel Walker, qualified for
the finals in the Junior 17-18 Men Sprints, but crashed during the
points race. Alkek Velodrome Manager Kathy Volski calls Walker “a
rider to watch for next year.” Other Memorial Hermann teammates
included Mark Dearing, Steven Garon, Kurt Weisinger, Brad Armstrong,
Matt Cross, Megan Cross, Ramtin Borbor, Bennett Brown, Elizabeth Cloutier,
Parker Craddock, Jana Eller, Tyler Hansen, Josh Heller, Anna Nuttall,
Cory Pelletier, Shelby Reynolds, Cristin Walker, and John Whitney.
The celebrating began before the first race even started with a Texas-sized
pre-event steak barbecue arranged by parents from the Memorial Hermann
team. More than 300 steaks and ears of corn were cooked for race participants
and their families. The barbecue gave the cyclists and their families
an opportunity to socialize before the championships began.
“I really enjoy taking an active role in helping further this
healthy sport by encouraging my son and his peers with events such
as this,” says Dr. Bing. “It pleases me that Memorial Hermann
Katy shares my dedication to working with these kids and supporting
the community through the hospital’s sponsorship.”
Other than the
championship events, the main topic of conversation among contenders
and attendees was that the winners
would receive a
cow in addition to the traditional cowboy hats given by Alkek Velodrome.
That rumor was put to rest when it was revealed that the top three
finishers in each category would receive a collectable “Cow Parade” cow.
First prize winners received an “America the Beautiful” cow,
second prize earned “Mooving Flag of Texas” and third place
rode in with the “Yellow Rose of Texas.”
