Free Prostate Cancer Screening to Help Provide Early Detection of Leading Cancer Killer Among Men

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

The Woodlands, Texas, August 18, 2003 -- Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital wants men over 50 years of age, and their families, to know about the importance of early prostate cancer detection. With annual screening, prostate cancer can be detected and treated at its earliest stages, helping to ensure a full recovery from this potentially fatal disease.

“ Annual prostate cancer screenings are an essential way for men over the age of 50 to take charge of their health,” says Paul Kenworthy, M.D., a practicing urologist. “These screenings not only detect prostate cancer, but can also shed light on any other possible prostate problems. It is important to understand that prostate cancer has no specific symptoms; many men live with this disease without knowing it.”

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer to affect men. Annual prostate cancer screenings are recommended for all men 50 years of age and older. However, you may be at higher risk of developing prostate cancer if you are African American, have a family history of the disease, and/or consume a diet high in fat. If you are at a higher risk, annual prostate cancer screenings should begin at the age of forty.

If you are experiencing any abnormal symptoms such as the inability to urinate, a need to urinate frequently, blood in the urine, weak or interrupted urine flow and or pain/burning during urination, you should consult your physician as soon as possible.

Kenworthy emphasizes that a prostate cancer screening takes just minutes, but is well worth it for the peace of mind. “It’s a very simple procedure that has proven to save lives.”

As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital encourages you to take advantage of its free prostate cancer screening on Tuesday, September 9, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. This screening includes a prostate specific blood test and a digital rectal examination. Screenings will take place at the Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital Cancer Center located at 920 Medical Plaza Drive, Suite 100. Registration is required and space is limited. To schedule an appointment, please call 1-877-644-2273.
