Houston, Texas, September 17, 2002 -- Strong leadership
and participation at all Memorial Hermann hospitals and corporate
departments made the 2002 Memorial Hermann United Way Campaign
its most successful ever, with contributions of more than $648,000.
These contributions exceeded last year's total of $601,000 and
surpassed the 2002 goal of $631,000. As a pacesetter for health
care in the greater Houston area, Memorial Hermann annually leads
the industry in contributions. This year, the United Way asked
its pacesetter organizations to "stretch" themselves
to a six percent increase over last year. The System achieved
a seven percent increase.

And the charitable
work continues even after the campaign. More than two dozen Memorial
Hermann employees exhibited their green thumbs and gardening expertise
by volunteering for the annual Day of Caring on Sept. 13. This
years project involved cleanup of a community vegetable
garden near downtown Houston, maintained by Target Hunger. Efforts
included weeding 12 large vegetable beds, tilling the soil, adding
new soil and mulching and planting seeds. Our volunteers
labored tirelessly in the sun and their hard work was evident
by the clean vegetable beds by the end of the day, said
organizer Ishwari Venkataraman, Memorial Hermann Director of Market
Analysis.
"Employees
from around the System demonstrated their caring spirit with their
dedicated efforts to clean up this garden. Several asked me how
soon they could participate in a similar project," she said.
