Cancer Program Awarded for Commitment to Quality Care

Community-based care top quality at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital

Houston, Texas, October 23, 2003 – The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, which sets the benchmark for cancer programs across the country, has awarded a “Certificate of Approval” to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.

Northwest’s “Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program” is now recognized for providing the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as offering compassionate care to patients. The cancer program at Memorial Hermann Northwest also received credit for its overall dedication to making progress in cancer care and treatment.

"We’ve all worked hard in this program to be among the best in the country, and it’s very rewarding to be acknowledged for our efforts," said Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital oncologist T.F. Tenczynski.

The Certificate of Approval ensures that cancer patients who receive care at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital have access to:

  • Quality care close to home
  • Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients
  • Information about cancer clinical trials, education, and support
  • Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care

Only one-fifth of the country’s hospitals have approved cancer programs and more than 80 percent of patients who are newly diagnosed are treated at these facilities. According to The American Cancer Society, approximately 1,334,100 cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year.
