Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Named A "Mother-Friendly" Worksite

Houston, Texas, November 11, 2005 Illustrating its commitment to helping new moms who choose to breast-feed return to work, Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Hospital recently earned the Mother-Friendly Designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS).

To qualify for this distinction, organizations must develop policies that support breastfeeding employees. They must provide flexible work schedules that allow time for pumping breast milk or nursing infants, offer private space where the employee can pump or nurse, and ensure easy access to clean running water and refrigeration.

“Breastfeeding can give infants a head start to a healthy life, and we educate the mothers who give birth here about its potential benefits as part of our exceptional patient care,” said Felicia Lane, RNC, director of perinatal services at Memorial Hermann Fort Bend. “We also want to enable our employees should they choose to make this choice for their own babies.”

Last year, the hospital’s maternity staff earned the Texas Ten Step Hospital designation from TDSHS and the Texas Hospital Association, in recognition of their efforts to educate new mothers about the potential benefits of breastfeeding.
