Neurological Surgery
Dr. Raul J. Cardenas is a neurosurgeon with expertise and fellowship training in minimally invasive/complex spinal surgery.
Born in Tennessee and raised in Mexico, Dr. Cardenas joined the Mischer Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in 2011. He is a third-generation neurosurgeon and graduated with honors from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. Upon graduation, he completed a surgery internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. Later, he finished his residency in neurological surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, where he also served as chief resident for the program. Most recently, Dr. Cardenas completed a fellowship in minimally invasive/complex spinal surgery at the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Cardenas is the 1999 recipient of the Tinsley-Harrison Award from the American Journal of Medical Sciences for research done on hemodialysis. He is widely published in his field. Among his recent publications was In Vitro Tissue Engineering of Nucleus Pulposus with Disc Stem Cells Derived from Adult Healthy Disc Tissue.
